University of Wyoming to Receive USDA Grant

Monday, October 3rd, 2011

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is offering the University of Wyoming a $670,000 federal grant to fund programs to train future farmers and ranchers. The grant is part of a federal agricultural training program authorized in the 2008 Farm Bill.

Over the past several years, participation in agricultural production has steadily declined. While the industry as a whole is still thriving, the average age of farmers in the United States is increasing each year, with the current average hovering in the mid fifties.

These continuing trends are worrying agricultural officials, who fear for the long-term sustainability of the entire industry. Deputy Secretary of Agriculture Kathleen Merrigan stated in a press release, “Our farmers are aging, and more of our young people are looking outside of farming for their careers. It’s time to reverse these trends, keep farmers on the farm and help beginning farmers and ranchers thrive in their careers.”

The grant will go towards extending the University of Wyoming’s ranch management program, which is designed to prepare and train farmers and ranchers for future careers in the ag industry. In addition, the funding will go towards the creation of new classes at the university as well as some small scholarships to help lure interest college students in agricultural science majors.

Ranching is particularly important to Wyoming, whose ranch population’s average age is between 56 and 57. As older ranchers retire, much of the state’s valuable ranching land is being sold to developers. Encouraging young people to enter the ranching industry will stop this hemorrhage, state officials hope.

Producers Petition the Trade Adjustment Assistance Program

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

The United States Department of Agriculture accepted a petition from Idaho, Utah and Wyoming producers asking for a review of the Trade Adjustment Assistance Program.

The Trade Adjustment Program provides assistance to U.S. producers of raw agriculture commodities who are affected by imports or competitive commodities. The program is part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act from 2009. The petition is to review the process the USDA uses to determine is a producer is eligible for the program.

The petitions asks that the USDA look at the national average price, value or production or cash receipts of their commodity and if they have declined more than 15 percent in the current year compared to the 3-year average. It also wants the USDA to compare these to the increase in imports during the same time.

The Montana Farm Service Agency encourages other producers to join the petition. If changes are made producers will have 90 days to contact the FSA to apply for the program.

Wyoming Counties Eligible for Crop Assistance

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

Eight Wyoming counties have been named disaster areas by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Hot Springs, Washakie, Fremont, Johnson, Sheridon, Park, Big Horn and Teton counties are all eligible for low-rate loans from the USDA.

The counties experience below zero temperatures between Oct. 6 and Oct. 13, 2009 causing devastating crop loss. Beets, dry beans and alfalfa crops were the hardest hit.

Producers in the area must have crop insurance on the losses and cannot receive credit for the crops. Those interested have eight months to apply for loans. Click here for more information.
