Stripe Rust Endangers Wheat Crops

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

Wheat is a major crop across the United States although farmers planted less acreage in the winter months.

Stripe Rust, a seeded wheat disease, is causing problems across major wheat growing states. The cool conditions thus far have caused a major problem spreading this disease across such states as southeast Colorado and Kansas.

Director of the Colorado Associations of Wheat Growers, Darrell Hanavan, said Stripe Rust is a huge threat to crops. It can cause as much as 50 percent yield loss in crops that are not treated with fungicide to prevent the disease.

Warm weather is the best way to cure the disease and farmers believe a three-day stretch of 90 degree weather would stop the problem. Farmers can also turn to fungicide, but this is a problem since harvesting time is near. Fungicide must be applied 30 to 45 days pre-harvest. Colorado farmers are expecting to harvest after July 4 which is sooner than 30 days.

Wheat Crops Low in Protein

Friday, October 30th, 2009

Farmers in North Dakota are enjoying the numbers of crops in the hopper but not the outcome of the crops.

Steve Hepper of Hubbard Feeds in Bismarck told KXN, “A lot of grain coming in receiving 13 and 12 protein wheat when go from 14 to 13 protein the range can be from 60-90 cents down… if getting 13 protein it’s a 90 cent discount at some elevators.”

Wheat in that range is worth $4.70 a bushel and these discounts have a huge impact on what farmers get paid for their crops. Hepper adds that farmers can get more for the crops if they hold on to wheat until after the harvest. “If look at futures - spreads between 20-30 cent spread from September to December - that tells us later down the road when need the wheat higher price..”

Market Assistance Loan Rate for Wheat Announced

Monday, June 8th, 2009

The USDA announced the 2009 Market Assistance Loan Rate for wheat. The loan rate in 2009 is $1.97 per bushel. The Market Assistance Loan Rate provides farmers cash flow at a reasonable rate while wheat is in storage on the farm or at the local elevator. For May the rate is 2.375 percent.

This program helps producers by supplying cash for farmers while crops are in storage to sell for a higher price. Loans are available for nine months, and producers must visit his or her local Farm Service Agency to apply.

Payments are issued through Direct Deposit, so payments may take up to three days following the loan closing.

“Commodities that are harvested and stored on the farm or at an approved elevator are eligible for a Market Assistance Loan if the producer maintains beneficial interest in the crop which includes risk, title and control of the commodity. Commodities are not eligible for a farm stored loan if the commodity is stored in wagon or trailer. Producers requesting a Market Assistance Loan have the option to repay the loan at the lower of the posted county price or principal plus interest. Producers with farm stored commodity loans must contact the Farm Service Agency to obtain permission before moving or delivering any commodity under loan,” according to The New-Messenger.com.

Planting Wheat losing its appeal

Wheat

Wheat was recently at historic highs and since has fallen in price, dramatically.  Kansas is known for producing large amounts of wheat, in fact, Kansas is our nations #1 producer in wheat (historically).  The National Agricultural Statistics Service reported Monday, Kansas farmers planted 9 million acres of wheat.  “This is the lowest number since 1957 for Kansas – and that was a drought year when over 4 million acres were placed into a land bank reserve,” stated Eddie Wells who works for the Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service (KASS).    Kansas set a record high in 1952 with more than 15 million acres of wheat planted.  The lowest on record is at 7.1 million acres of wheat set in 1957 according to  KASS.  “When you see this volume, there is some deliberate intention  to it,” stated Eddie Wells, “Farmers are carefully deciding what they want to do  with the ground.”
