2008 USDA Farm and Ranch Irrigation Survey

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

The 2008 USDA Farm and Ranch Irrigation Survey found that 54.9 million acres of farm and ranch land across the United States is irrigated. This has increased five percent since 2003.

The USDA admits that water is the most limited, but necessary resource for farmers and ranchers. “For farmers and ranchers who are looking for more efficient ways to irrigate their land and ways to reduce their expenses, the results of the Farm and Ranch Irrigation Survey provide a valuable tool to help them make informed decisions about the future of their operations,” said Molly Jahn, USDA Deputy Under Secretary for Research, Education and Economics.

The survey emphasized the trend in more efficient irrigation methods such as using sprinkler systems and less gravity irrigation. The survey also pointed out that 9,843 farms use recycled water. Click here to see the full report.

Cantaloupe Consumption Increases

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

The USDA’s Economic Research Service released its annual survey of cantaloupe statistics.
The survey includes 41 charts of information dating back to 1947, and touched on acreage, yields, production, price, value, supply, disappearance, per capita usage, exports, imports, arrivals, chemical use and more.

One set of data said cantaloupe numbers have increased over the past five decades from 1.3 billion pounds in 1960 to 2.9 billion pounds in 2009. Imports have increased from 79 million pounds in 1960 to 945 million pounds in 2009.

Most importantly, the consumption of American grown cantaloupe has increased. In 1960 only 6 percent of cantaloupes eaten were domestic, but today the number has grown to 34 percent.
These growing numbers are promising for cantaloupe producers or farmers looking to explore other crops. If you are in need of a loan to further your farming business, contact Farm Plus today. Low-rate loans are available for your needs. Call 866-929-5585 or visit our website for more information.

Oregon Farmers Top Survey

Friday, October 30th, 2009

A USDA survey has found that Oregon farmers are the most tech savy in the western part of the country.

The survey, that is conducted every two years, found that 79 percent of Oregon farmers are most likely to use a computer with their agriculture operations. When comparing farmers feel the computer is just as important as a tractor.

“We know that Oregon farmers and ranchers are savvy when it comes to technology,” says Katy Coba, Oregon Department of Agriculture director. “We have consistently ranked high among all states each time these computer surveys are done. What the latest results show, however, is that many other states are finally catching up to where we have been for the past few years.”

Close behind was Washington, Wyoming and Idaho. New Hampshire leads the country with 83 percent of farmers using computers.
