Say Goodbye to the “Other White Meat”

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

Pork has been the “other white meat” since 1987, but big changes are being made in the agriculture marketing industry.

Consumers wanted an alternative to high fat meat, and pork was just this. Ceci Snyder, vice president-marketing for the Pork Board said the organization has found the slogan does not move pork off grocers’ shelves. Throughout the past 20 years pork sales have stayed level.

The well-known slogan may not have moved product, but it quickly made its way into American pop culture through bulletin boards, popular commercials and magazine advertisements.

The Pork Board is starting a new advertising campaign in winter or next spring, but no details are available. Snyder said the campaign aims to “break through the clutter of messages that consumers receive.”

Pork exports are increasing. The USDA reported that April had 7 percent increase in pork exports than April 2009, and the export level is at its highest since November 2008. According to the U.S. Meat Export Federation April pork/pork variety totaled 344.4 million pounds (worth $400.95 million).

USDA Cannot Give More Support

Friday, August 28th, 2009

The USDA has responded to the pork industry’s request for more money. Iowa Governor Chet Culver and eight other governor’s asked the USDA to support the industry by purchasing more pork.

However, the USDA cannot find extra money in the budget to do this.

The USDA has purchased $117 million in pork products for the nutrition assistance programs during the fiscal year, but the governors are asking the department to purchase $50 million more.

“Due to economic conditions, the value of requests for commodity purchases far exceeds the amount of remaining funding, but we will continue to monitor market developments and make decisions accordingly,” USDA spokesman Justin DeJong said.

Pork Industry Impacted by Swine Flu

Friday, May 15th, 2009

A struggling pork industry is bracing themselves for more hardships.

According to Chris Hurt, agricultural economist at Purdue University, Indiana hog farmers have been losing money every quarter over the last year and half, and it the problem is increasing as the swine flu scare lingers in everyone’s minds.

Hurt said hog producers have lost $5 a head as of April 24 and today it is at $20. Since the news of the outbreak the pork industry lost $30 million.

Despite efforts by the Agriculture Department and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to assure the public pork is safe, few people are listening. Especially after a case of swine flu was transmitted through pork in Canada.

That case was rare, and most every case was contracted from person to person.

“I think it is a new twist. It’s one where the pork producers had said it’s not been found in hogs — well, you can’t say that anymore,” Hurt said. “Maybe it’s the hogs that should be more scared of humans at this point. Or, our hog producers really needing to increase their biosecurity to really try to keep it out of our herds here in Indiana.”

Consumers do not realize there are extremely strict health protection standards in practice. State officials work hard to ensure that the standards are always in effect and producers follow them.
