NRCS Accepting Proposals to Conserve Land

Monday, February 28th, 2011

The United States Department of Agriculture is calling out to farmers looking for funding for conservation practices.

The USDA’s Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) is looking for proposals of projects that improve water quality, air quality or energy conservation. Over $25 million is available to producers looking to protect land and resources for the future.

Farmers, ranchers and individuals can apply for conservation funds in their home state.

The CIG is also looking for farmers who address the importance of technology in agriculture. Proposals should demonstrate projects with innovated techniques that not only assist with agriculture but also conserve land.

The funds are awarded through a nationwide competition with each state selecting the best proposals. From here a region wide leader will make the decision on the best proposal and money will be distributed. The money is only available for single or multi-year projects that do not exceed three years.

NRCS Working to Protect Wetlands Habitants

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

Conservation is always a priority at the United States Department of Agriculture. The Natural Resources Conservation Service is accepting applications for a new program to protect, restore, enhance and manage habitats for wetland-dependent wildlife.

The Wetlands Reserve Enhancement Program is a voluntary conservation program that works alongside tribes, government agencies and nongovernmental organizations to protect wildlife across the United States.

The NRCS is accepting proposals for projects, watershed-wide or larger geographic areas. All entries must be received by May 24 and must be turned into a local office. Proposals cannot be submited by fax, e-mail or the grants.gov Web site.

Funding can be used on agricultural or non-agricultural land for conservation purposes. Each entry will be evaluated on a personal basis and will be sent through a competitive process determined by the USDA.

More information is available at the Wetlands Reserve Enhancement Program’s Web site or the Natural Resources Conservation Services’ Web site.

NRCS Deadline Approaching for Idaho Producers

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

Idaho producers interested in participating in the USDA’S Natural Resources Conservation Services program must apply by February 12, 2010 to receive assistance for the 2010 year.

As part of The Farm Bill, the program is designed for producers interested in protecting or improving natural resources on their land.

“Whether they’re interested in improving irrigation efficiency, improving wildlife habitat, protecting water quality or reducing erosion,” said Jeff Burwell, NRCS State Conservationist, “chances are, we have a program that can provide both technical and financial assistance for qualifying applicants.”

In 2009 Idaho producers received $19 million in assistance.

NRCS Dates Announced

Friday, August 28th, 2009

More information has been released about the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) program. Those interested in signing up for the program have been able to apply since August 10. However, Agriculture Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan announced August 6 that the cutoff for the first period payment schedule is September 30.

The NRCS program is appealing because unlike past programs that allow only certain areas to participate, anyone can apply to be eligible for this program. The only qualifications are that the land must be: cropland, grassland, prairie, improved pastureland, rangeland, non-industrial forestland, and agriculture land under jurisdiction of an Indian tribe.

To apply participants must complete the 2009 conservation stewardship self-screening checklist available here.

Following application the landowner must set up a meeting with NRCS staff to evaluate the land. Once the applicant has been approved, a contract can be developed that is valid for five years.
