The USDA is re-evaluating its estimate for this season’s crops.
The numbers for barley, oats, durum wheat and spring wheat will be effected. To date there are many acres in Minnesota, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota and Wyoming that sit unharvested because of poor weather.
The numbers, that originally were to appear in September 30’s report, will be reflected in the USDA’s November 10 report.
The USDA was estimating an abnormally large wheat crop. Although this has been true so far, a number of farmers are unhappy with the quality.

Foodies are always looking for the most whole way to consume food, but this is not always the safest.
Although it is against regulations, some Wisconsin farmers are in the raw milk sales. This is milk directly from the cow, without any pasteurization. However, officials have closed down raw milk sales at an Elkhorn, Wisconsin farm after two dozen people fell ill from bad milk.
Zinniker Farm Inc., was given an order after as many as 35 people from Walworth, Waukesha and Racine counties fell ill with campylobacter jejuni since August 13. This is a bacterial infection that causes digestive problems.
The disease was traced back to the farm and its cows. Since April state officials have been working to prohibit the sale of all raw milk in Wisconsin.

Harris Sherman, a Colorado state official, was appointed by President Barack Obama as agriculture undersecretary for natural resources.
Sherman was the director of Colorado’s Department of Natural Resources and is now in charge of the 191 million-acre national forest system and the USDA programs that encourage stewardship of farm and range land.
Although environmental groups oppose his appointment because he had an active role in a state plan that offers logging, oil and gas production in roadless areas, the White House is confident in the appointment. In a statement the White House said that Sherman played an important role in “the largest expansion of the state’s wilderness and parks programs.”

Farmers in North Dakota are enjoying the numbers of crops in the hopper but not the outcome of the crops.
Steve Hepper of Hubbard Feeds in Bismarck told KXN, “A lot of grain coming in receiving 13 and 12 protein wheat when go from 14 to 13 protein the range can be from 60-90 cents down… if getting 13 protein it’s a 90 cent discount at some elevators.”
Wheat in that range is worth $4.70 a bushel and these discounts have a huge impact on what farmers get paid for their crops. Hepper adds that farmers can get more for the crops if they hold on to wheat until after the harvest. “If look at futures - spreads between 20-30 cent spread from September to December - that tells us later down the road when need the wheat higher price..”

The Associate Press reports that the USDA is expecting this year’s pecan crops to reach 309 million pounds. This is 60 percent higher than 2008’s 193.9 million pounds.
Although this leaves an abundance of pecans for the upcoming holiday season, major rain in the top pecan-growing states could lessen the quality of the crops and the price at the store.
Georgia is the country’s biggest pecan-producing state and has suffered heavy rains and flooding in the past month.

The Iowa Farm Bureau has predicted that Iowans are looking at an increase of $251 million in property taxes due to Governor Chet Culver’s order for an across-the-board cut in spending.
IFB president, Craig Lang, thinks that the cut in aid for schools, mental health programs and property tax credits will cause a huge increase. Culver insists that schools will use money from cash reserves instead of raising property taxes.
“Although the governor said he will not burden Iowans with a tax hike to balance the budget, that is exactly what he is doing,†Lang told the local media. “The state’s budget default process of leaning on property taxpayers has to stop. Homeowners, farmers and Main Street businesses simply can’t afford a tax increase and a property tax increase is a tax increase,†Lang said.

Federal funding is available to Illinois farmers who lost crops in last year’s abnormally wet planting season.
Governor Pat Quinn announced that federal disaster assistance money is available in 88 counties for farmers who saw significant damage to crops.
The USDA approved 58 counties as natural disaster areas and 30 counties as contiguous counties for low-interest loans. Every county in the southern half of Illinois qualifies.
A press release released by Quinn said, “The loans that this declaration triggers will help those farmers who weren’t able to plant a crop. They can be used not only to pay production costs, but also to refinance existing debt and cover essential family living expenses.”
From April through July there was a total of 20.94 inches of rain, 4.74 inches above average.
Those farmers who qualify should contact their local Farm Service Agency for more information.

The USDA is conducting a USDA Fruit Chemical use Survey.
The survey, that provides data concerning agricultural chemical use on fruit crops, has not been conducted since 2007. This year’s survey focuses on 20 selected fruit crops and the information will be collected by the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS).
“The Fruit Chemical Use Survey gives producers the opportunity to explain how they use agricultural chemicals responsibly to produce a safe, healthy, and high-quality food supply” said Vilsack. “The resulting data will help support the regulatory programs that protect the health and safety of agriculture producers and consumers alike.”
Survey responses will be collected until December and will be published in July 2010. The information is expected to be used for decision-making regarding everyone who grows fruit in the agriculture industry.
Growers are encouraged to participate. For more information visit www.nass.usda.gov or call (800) 727-9540.

Issue 2 is a heated discussion currently across Ohio.
In November residents will vote, alongside a number of other issues and government positions, on whether this initiative is beneficial for producers in the state.
If Issue 2 is passed, a livestock care standards board will regulate the treatment of farm animals including chicken, cows and pigs. Farm animal treatment has been a popular discussion since a documentary aired earlier this year on HBO about animal cruelty.
A similar initiative passed in California last year.
